Mauldslie Woods Walk

Nestled in the Clyde Valley between Rosebank and Garrion Bridge, containing remnants of the designed landscape of Mauldslie Castle.

Nestled in the Clyde Valley between Rosebank and Garrion Bridge and containing remnants of the designed landscape of the now demolished Mauldslie Castle, Mauldslie Woods shows the varied character of the Clyde Valley landscape. Part of the area was once an orchard, one of many producing the apples, pears and plums for which the Clyde Valley was famous.

Stage 1. Mauldslie Bridge

Drive or walk through the arched entrance over Mauldslie Bridge, and begin the walk by the information board on the east side of the bridge.

Stage 2. The old parkland

From the bridge follow the Clyde Walkway downstream, you’ll pass favoured fishing spots for salmon and brown trout. Here the trail is set within the parkland of the former Mauldslie Castle, demolished in 1935, with many trees over 200 years old.

Stage 3. Into the woods

The wooded slope ahead of you is Mauldslie Woods, part of the Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve. It is predominantly a broad-leafed woodland, with remnants of earlier larch and spruce plantings. Soon the walkway swings left and continues downstream.

Stage 4. What can you see?

After around 500m the River Clyde is in a tranquil setting. Stay quiet and keep your eyes peeled as kingfishers, goosanders and otters are regularly seen here.

Stage 5. Garrion Burn

The trail soon rises into West Brownlee Wood, before turning right, downhill, following the Garrion Burn for around 300m. The route then turns right, away from the burn, climbing a little over the spur before returning down the slope to the river.

Stage 6. And back again

Upon reaching the river turn left and return along the Clyde Walkway back towards Mauldslie Bridge.
