Carluke Young Gallery Creepy Crawlies Exhibition

School children connect with local landscape through art

In May 2015, some larger than life creepy crawlies were spotted in and around Carluke. Fortunately, it was nothing to be afraid of, as they had been created by primary 6 and 7 children from Carluke Learning District.

Pupils explored the flora and fauna of local nature sites with South Lanarkshire Council Countryside Rangers Citizen Science Project before creating the sculptures based on their findings back in the classroom with Impact Arts. They used sketches that they made when visiting the sites to create mini sculptures out of wire and papier mache, before voting on which insect the whole class would make a giant sculpture of together.

The Carluke Creepy Crawlies were exhibited as a pop-up exhibition in Carluke Market Place on Saturday 20 June 2015 and as an exhibition at Cadzow Gallery, Chatelherault Country Park from Saturday 15 – Friday 21 August 2015.

The schools that took part were Crawfordyke Primary School, Braidwood Primary School, Kirkton Primary School, High Mill Primary School, Carluke Primary School, Victoria Park (ASN), Forth Primary School, St Athanasius Primary School and Law Primary School. The project was funded by Heritage Lottery Fund supported Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership.
